When I was a child, I hated school. But later in life as a college student, I learned to love it. It wasn’t easy at first but, as I started to change my attitude and looked at it as being something fun to do, I started to enjoy learning. It helped having professors that seemed to love what they did and had fun doing it. As such, I try to bring that same attitude of love for my work as well as a playful childlike curiosity to the classes I teach. Some of my colleagues call this style of teaching “edutainment.”

That didn’t mean my college years were all fun and games. These same professors challenged me to think critically instead of using my feelings to interpret the world around me. They also taught me how to communicate clearly and concisely through the written word. What I really like about teaching for UMUC is the emphasis on developing the student’s “critical thinking” and “writing” skills.

Whether I’m teaching online, face-to-face (F2F) or a hybrid course, I always try to include projects that are fun, interesting, realistic and current to the present situation. I highly encourage open and honest discourse on any related subject. I want students to be engaged and unafraid to challenge current thinking as well as their fellow students. In the classroom I like to utilize a wide variety of mass media to help bring the subject at hand to life. If you’re in one of my classes and you find it boring or unenlightening, it’s because you’re trying not to learn.

I also love teaching Business and Management as it synthesizes all of the major areas from UMUC’s General Education Requirements (GER’s). In business, to be successful, you must be able to communicate. Business also relates to the Arts and Humanities category through philosophy and ethics. Economics, sociology and psychology, etc., involve the Behavioral and Social Sciences and penetrate virtually every aspect of business today. Depending on what your company makes may determine which of the physical sciences and how much mathematics you’ll need. Lastly, how could we get a leg up on the competition of we didn’t know how to do proper research or use technology?

If you want a degree where you will be challenged and incorporates a variety of skill sets, Business and Management is where it’s at! Given the current global economic and political situation, the field of business is just as dynamic and exciting as ever. In my opinion, certainly more so than any other field of study. Lastly, if you want to find a job that utilizes your education, business has always had the highest percentage of graduates that get good paying jobs in their field of study after graduation.
